"The Little Drools Story"

This little thing I do started the day I got my husband, Dale to stop at a shop that sold sewing machines. “Just to look”, after all it doesn’t hurt to look right? So in we go, and as the sales lady walks up asking if we need help I say, “Yes, we are here to buy a sewing machine” We made payments of $52.00 a month. I love that sewing machine; I still use it everyday. If you are buying something that I’ve made you can bet I used this machine.

I’ve never quite been able to get what I want using that “just to look” line anymore. Well, we’ve been married for 26 years and he knows me pretty well by now.  I wanted to make custom clothing for my then two-year-old son, Bo. Bo was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare bones disease where he could fracture with little or no trauma. Bo had several fractures that healed before he was even born, and the Doctors told us he would never have a birthday. Little did they know, Bo lived big. I vowed to do everything I could to make him happy, and while he suffered terrible pain, I did my best to learn to keep him comfortable and safe from the world, and then something happened. Life grew to be routine. I had another baby, Jake. He was born healthy and drooling, I started putting him in all the cute clothes I received for Bo as gifts that Bo could never wear. And then because he drooled so badly, a bib. You know how necessity leads to invention, and well, I was mad. Finally a healthy baby to dress up cute and I have to put these ugly bibs on him, I don’t think so! I made Jake the cutest bibs and then my sisters started to have babies, so “Auntie Kathy” had to make them some cute cow bibs, and then my sister’s friends wanted some cute bibs for their babies and the next thing I know, I’m pregnant with Maggie. I wanted a girl so badly. To this day she’s been a good investment. We shop, you know, “just to look.”

Anyway, back to the bibs. In 1987, I got a business license and my sister Beverly came up with the name Little Drools, and now I have this great sewing room and everything I have on the site is handmade by me. I have to get this art out of me somehow. I get to see babies in something fun that I designed. Sew, that’s what and why I do this. To stay sane :D. My son Bo was the reason I taught myself to sew, my son Jake is why I made the bibs, and my daughter Maggie helps me sell them… or she did until she ditched me to go to college. She’s majoring in International Business, so someday I need to hire her, but right now I needed a new way to sell my things. I walk on crutches now due to a bad hip. I’ve had it replaced three times and I just can’t set up at craft shows or flea markets anymore.

So its time for this website. My customers have been asking for a site for a long time. I’m glad to tell you it’s finally a reality. I will keep sewing every day and as I make things, put them up on the site. Once they are gone, that’s it, you’ll have to try the next batch if you didn’t get one. I hope this becomes one of your favorite sites, not because making babies is so much fun, it’s the drooling, slurping and burping I can help you with, silly customer. Bo lived for 23 years, when he was a baby I grieved for all the things he wouldn’t do, like play football and ride a bike. But he grew up to be a son that anyone would be proud of, he made web pages for people, and loved politics and comedy. I laughed more than I cried and even when he was sick, he encouraged me to sew and not worry about him so much. Bo died in his sleep on a Sunday morning in September of 2002, in his own bed. He wasn’t even sick. We will never be the same, Bo called me the best mom in the world, he made it so easy. Jake is helping me with the computer stuff, (good thing I didn’t sell him to the gypsies after all) and Maggie is attending San Diego State University, studying hard and having fun. Dale is still married to the “bib lady” and happily, that’s me. :P
